A home built of Concrete Southern Home Show October 27, 2006 Show Entrance Will Captivate You The show entrance near the Jim Graham Building will be a spectacular design by Dreambuilders Enterprises, Inc., and Down to Earth Landscape Design. The two companies have partnered to create a show entrance that will send your imagination reeling. "We design and build together," says Louie Tufillaro, owner of Dreambuilders Enterprises, Inc., of his partnership with Ben Case of Down to Earth Landscape Design. Together, the two companies created an arbor at last year's Southern Ideal Home Show that received rave reviews. This year, even bigger plans are in the make. Borrowing from principles of ancient design, landscaper Ben Case of Down to Earth Landscape Design will create an arbor using stone, laminated beams and stainless steel. An unusual gazebo will also grace the entrance. "It's most unique things you've ever seen," says Lou. "I wanted to design something that hadn't been built before, so I looked at modern art magazines and came up with this idea." The gazebo will be created from 12-foot wood beams that have been reshaped to create an arc effect. The individual arcs are intertwined on the roof, creating a unique curved effect. "It looks like something you'd see in front of a museum," says Lou. The deck area of the entrance will be built from purple heart wood, giving the shading an real purple cast. According to Lou, purple heart wood is becoming more popular due to its durability and beauty. "We will be doing pavers of various colors and textures, retaining and terrace walls, as well as a waterfall and pond," says Ben. "We have a really nice fiber optic lighting system designed specifically for ponds that features lights that can change color and the convenience of only one light bulb for the whole system," says Ben. "We will feature lush plantings and a variety of materials to create an inviting and unique entrance to the show." A Home Built Of Concrete Homeowners Love The Benefits When we picture luxury estate homes, we don't usually envision a home built of concrete. However, Jon Rufty, one of the Triangle's premier homebuilders, challenges our preconceived notions of this time-honored material by building a home in Cary of unsurpassed beauty and design function. Using reinforced concrete for all structural components, Rufty's venture is a 10,000 square-foot home in Birklands, Fonville Morisey's newest luxury estate community developed by Creedmoor Partners. The $2 million home, designed by Davenport Architecture + Design, Inc. of Cary, will showcase the latest in upper-end finishes and features. "Homeowners are pleasantly surprised at the unparalleled benefits concrete offers them," says Rufty. "While homeowners can expect to pay a little more for a custom-built home using reinforced concrete, they can also expect a refined home that is low-maintenance, energy-efficient, safe, quiet and comfortable." Rufty Homes, Inc., will feature an actual 2' x 2' x 8' concrete wall and floor section. Visitors can see unfinished, finished and dissected portions of a reinforced concrete wall and floor. They will also have a chance to learn about the quality and versatility available with home construction using concrete. Aging Americans Need Well-Designed Homes The National Association of Home Builders and AARP have developed a comprehensive training program for builders and remodelors who want to make these modifications. The program is called CAPS, Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist. A CAPS designation says a company has been trained to implement the necessary changes in a home. By working with a CAPS company, you or a loved one can live at independently at home, rather than move to a retirement center. Working with a qualified CAPS company is the best way to prepare your home. Speak with Peggy and Dave Mackowski of Quality Home Improvements (one of only two CAPS companies in the area) about evaluating your home for senior adult use.
